Discovering Portugal’s Douro Valley: A First-Hand Look at Grand Circle's New River Cruise
Grand Circle Cruise Line recently launched a new River Cruise along Portugal's scenic Douro River, marking an exciting expansion into one of Europe's most renowned wine regions. To get an insider's perspective on this inaugural sailing, we spoke with Kimberly Page—Grand Circle Cruise Line’s Director of Brand Management—who experienced the maiden voyage firsthand.
In this candid Q&A, Kim shared what made this cruise special—from authentic home-hosted experiences and exceptional local guides to the unique culinary traditions that define Portuguese culture. Here's what travelers can expect from this intimate new itinerary (and why it's already generating buzz among Grand Circle's seasoned cruisers).
Grand Circle Cruise Line: Can you describe your role in the company and why you were chosen to experience this first departure with our travelers?
Kim Page: As the Director of Brand Management for Grand Circle Cruise Line, my role centers on ensuring that our brand values—cultural connection, traveler-centric design, and unsurpassed value—are reflected across every part of the journey. Joining this inaugural departure was an opportunity to see how the trip unfolds in real time and make sure the experience lives up to our travelers’ expectations. I was able to gather insights that will help us shape both the traveler experience and the way we communicate it moving forward.
Kim was able to see plenty of "peaceful vineyard-draped hillsides" during her trip.
GCCL: What portion of the itinerary did you travel on?
KP: All of it! I joined the group for two nights in Lisbon before boarding the ship for the full cruise in Gaia, just across the river from Porto. From big city vibes to peaceful vineyard-draped hillsides, I got to experience the entire journey through the Douro Valley—and all 10 of the locks along the way.
GCCL: What highlights were you most looking forward to before the trip?
KP: There was a lot to look forward to as this was my first trip to Portugal. I was especially excited to explore the historic neighborhoods of Lisbon and Porto, to see how our team had curated local encounters in smaller towns along the Douro, and to experience Portugal by river—a first for Grand Circle Cruise Line. I was also looking forward to observing how travelers engaged with the onboard programming as this was our first chartered river cruise tailored specifically for this region.
GCCL: Did any unexpected highlights emerge for you?
KP: One of the most memorable highlights was my group’s Home Hosted Dinner experience. The family was incredibly gracious and genuinely excited to share their stories with us and they treated our group to a multi-course meal of local traditions, delicacies and family made wine. I’d also be remiss not to mention the Program Directors, who are truly the heart of Grand Circle. Even having experienced other trips before, Carolina, Carlos, and Joana were incredible, and their attention to the travelers and surprise touches throughout the trip remain a highlight. They all embodied the kind of authentic connection we strive to create.
Kim enjoyed a Home-Hosted Dinner at this riverside manor.
GCCL: Will the river cruising experience feel familiar to travelers used to our classic itineraries? If different, how so?
KP: If you’ve sailed with us before, you’ll recognize the easy pace, the way we dock right in the heart of charming towns, and the close-knit feel onboard. I found the Douro River to be more tranquil and winding, and the surrounding landscape—with its steep, terraced vineyards—is unique among our cruise regions. Portugal itself is a blend of old-world charm, bold colors, soulful music, and incredible wine. So yes, it feels familiar—but also fresh and different in the best way.
GCCL: What were the impressions from travelers onboard?
KP: Several guests highlighted the incredible Program Directors we had onboard, the knowledge and friendlessness of the local guides, and the sense of camaraderie that developed quickly among the group. There was a real appreciation for the unique character of Portugal—and a shared sentiment that this itinerary is something special. As this was a chartered ship, we continue to work on improving our onboard experience, so it meets travelers’ expectation of excellence.
GCCL: What culinary highlights did you enjoy that are unique to this region?
KP: Portugal’s culinary (and wine) traditions were a true highlight. I loved trying bacalhau à Brás, a comforting dish made with salt cod, eggs, and potatoes. The pastéis de nata in Lisbon were unforgettable—still warm, with just the right amount of caramelized sugar. We also enjoyed a multi-course lunch at a local vineyard estate as part of our Home Hosted visit, where the port wine pairings elevated each dish. Onboard, the chef did a fantastic job weaving Portuguese flavors into our meals—fresh fish, amazing olive oil, local cheeses… it was all delicious.
And here’s a little something to look forward to: in 2026, we’re planning a special Douro departure focused on the region’s incredible culinary and wine traditions. If food, wine, and immersive travel are your kind of thing, this one’s going to be a must.
Kim gave us a little sneak peek for 2026, when there will be "a special Douro departure focused on the region’s incredible culinary and wine traditions."
GCCL: Anything we didn’t touch on that you’d like to share?
KP: One thing I’d add is the unique sense of intimacy that defined this sailing. Perhaps it was the nature of the Douro itself—a quieter river with fewer vessels—or maybe it was the shared sense of discovery that comes with experiencing a brand-new itinerary and the connections it formed with our travelers, over 80% of them being part of Inner Circle. I came away from this journey proud of what GCCL and the Worldwide Team curated, and excited for what’s to come as more of our travelers get to experience this beautiful corner of the world.
