Through the Eyes of Culture - Masks from Around the World
May 19, 2016 - September 30, 2016
Grand Circle Gallery is thrilled to present an exhibit of masks from tribes and cultures across five continents – North and South America, Asia, Europe, and Africa – plus Oceania. This show reflects Alan and Harriet Lewis's commitment to presenting travel-related art exhibits that teach and inspire visitors to the Gallery.
Over forty masks are on display, complemented by vintage travel posters and artifacts. Because Grand Circle is an international travel company, the Gallery was able to draw from all of the regions we travel to, for many of the masks in this exhibit. We also thank the Hamill Gallery of Tribal Art in Roxbury, Massachusetts, for the loan of many treasured masks from their incredible collection of African art.
Through the Eyes of Culture offers the stories of cultures and traditions around the world, as told through their masks. As activist and author Marty Rubin said, "Behind every mask there is a face, and behind that a story."
