I was saddened by the news in the Feb. GC Foundation E-Newsletter of the passing of Mr. Kazimierz Smolen.  He was a survivor of the Nazi concentration camp in Auschwitz.  We had the honor of meeting him at the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum a couple years ago during GC's  Best of Eastern Europe trip.  He told us his experiences through an intrepreter and stayed to answer everyone's questions.  There was not a dry eye in the room.  To just look at him, you would never guess the horrors he lived.  He had a kind face & warm embrace.  I have told his story to many others upon our return home.  I have never forgotten his name or his story.  I have thought of him often.

I personally thanked him for sharing with us his memories and his tireless efforts to get the truth out to the world.  I thank Grand Circle for giving us the opportunity to inter-act with Mr. Smolen.

Mr. Kazimierz Smolen died at the age of 92 on January 27, 2012.  How fitting that it was the 67th anniversary of the camps liberation and also known as International Holocaust Rememberance Day.
