A note from independent filmmaker David Conover on why he chose this film:
Since 2008, David Hoffman has been traveling the world and vlogging (video logging) about his adventures on the travel website, David’s Been Here. Searching for the antidote to a 9-to-5 lifestyle, David has journeyed to more than 76 countries. Talk about intrepid! In this short video, we visit Istanbul, from David’s “top 15 places to see.” The Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace, and the Blue Mosque all allow for deep reflection on a people and a place—the kind of reflection that I try to work into every trip in some way. At the Galata Mevlevi Museum, you can witness a Mevlevi Sema Ceremony, a dance of the mystical branch of Islam known as Sufism. This is a beautiful, physical form of meditation: devotees called dervishes whirl in circles, rhythmically breathing and chanting “Allah,” as they shed their egos, deepen their relationship with God, and find harmony with the world. Every breath, every beat, every movement, every note of music is intentional. Highly recommended!
