A note from independent filmmaker David Conover on why he chose this film:
Vienna’s Café Sperl is essentially an active time capsule from the late nineteenth century. The café was built in 1880 with crystal chandeliers dangling from high ceilings, marble tabletops situated by arched windows and intimate booths, and parquet floors spanning the interior. It has not been modernized or been rebuilt since. The patrons have changed over the years, but their habits are as consistent as the decor and practices of Café Sperl. People sip coffee, converse with friends, and read newspapers about all that has changed—and what hasn’t—in the world outside.
