A note from our curator, independent filmmaker David Conover on why he chose this film:
A famous burger joint in Cambodia? It’s not what you would normally seek out in Phnom Penh, but the story behind the “love burger” and Mike’s Burger House might just inspire you to go. Owner Mike Chenda Im, a native of Battambang, lived through the brutal regime of the Khmer Rouge, which lasted from 1975 to 1979. He and surviving family members escaped to Los Angeles, where Mike got himself through college, got married, and slowly built a new life for himself. But when his marriage fell apart, he moved back home to Cambodia—now a different country from the one he left decades ago—and found food and love again.
