Rudy Maxa: Berlin

Posted on 10/31/2017 12:00:00 AM in What We’re Watching

A note from independent filmmaker David Conover on why he chose this film:

Perhaps no other city has rebuilt itself in quite the same way as Berlin. It has seen war, occupation, and division. Its resilience, resourcefulness, and ingenuity are visible in its art and architecture—like Mies van der Rohe’s Neue Nationalgalerie. But we also see an alternative side of Berlin that’s quirky and wonderful. Rudy Maxa encounters the Monster Kabinett warehouse (home to some of the most impressive—and intimidating—array of industrial art) and takes in a meal at Nocti Vagus, where guests eat blindfolded and experience their meals with their senses of hearing, taste, and smell heightened to new levels. No wonder David Bowie spoke fondly of the city, saying “Berlin, the greatest cultural extravaganza that one could imagine.”
