A note from independent filmmaker David Conover on why he chose this film:
A fierce creative spirit can emerge late in life. Set in Latvia, this film by Pawel Nazaruk is a beautiful and quirky peek into the life of Jevgeniya, an 80-year-old late-blooming folklore artist and mask-maker. We meet her through a much younger gallerist named Viktoria, who travels out of Riga to visit Jevgeniya in a rural village, her home town. What follows is an endearing relationship between the two women. Jevgeniya makes a hot meal for Viktoria, and lets her sleep on her couch. Jevgeniya is playful and cunning, just as one might expect for a mask-maker. But at the same time, she is wise and nurturing. I give this one three thumbs up!
