Mongolia's Nomads: Herding Life

Posted on 10/31/2017 12:00:00 AM in What We’re Watching

A note from independent filmmaker David Conover on why he chose this film:

If you haven’t heard of the Vanishing Cultures Project, it’s worth checking out. The non-profit group uses documentary journalism to help document, empower, and protect indigenous groups—specifically their languages, customs, knowledge, stories, and arts. This short film by Lauren Knapp, produced in partnership with the Vanishing Cultures Project, transports us to the northern Mongolian province of Khovsgol. We meet two pastoral herders who make up one of the world’s last remaining nomadic cultures. What challenges do they confront in the face of modernity? What freedoms do they experience that we do not? What is lost when ways of living cease to exist?
