Chengdu: The Mecca of Spicy Food

Posted on 12/26/2017 12:00:00 AM in What We’re Watching

A note from independent filmmaker David Conover on why he chose this film:

“We always keep our senses open: listen, see, smell, taste.” This is how chef Jek Tan describes the people of Chengdu. They’re tenacious, don’t easily give in to adversity, and have short, spicy tempers. It’s apt then, that they’re known for their intensely spicy food. In this episode of CNNGo, we visit with Chef Tan at his restaurant, Chen Ma Po Tofu, famous for its iconic spicy tofu dish. You don’t know how spicy something is going to be, he warns, so your first bite should always be a small nibble. Let the taste settle in: when the spice first hits you, it will hit hard. Welcome to Chengdu!
