A note from independent filmmaker David Conover on why he chose this film:
Tunisia may seem like an unlikely country for wine culture, but Tunisians have been making and enjoying wine for thousands of years. The practice continues to flourish! In the wake of Tunisia’s 2011 Arab Spring revolution, winemaking, tasting, pairing, and all things wine-related have skyrocketed in popularity. Writer Amanda Barnes describes herself as a “wine writer on a mission.” What a mission! She enjoys Tunisia’s wide array of local wines with an even wider array of people. While exploring the medina in downtown Tunis, Amanda befriends a lemon vendor and photographer who pulls her off the “tourist trail” to see uncensored street art—the old city’s signs of a new generation. She spends countless hours enjoying wines and dishes amongst new friends. While you may enjoy one of Tunisia’s mineral-driven white wines with a light fish dish or one of their fruity reds with some hearty Tunisian lamb, the most important wine pairing might simply be human connection. Cheers! Or as the Tunisians say, “Saha!”
