100 Wonders: Highgate Cemetery

Posted on 10/31/2017 12:00:00 AM in What We’re Watching

A note from independent filmmaker David Conover on why he chose this film:

There are some well-known facts about Highgate Cemetery, one of London’s “Magnificent Seven” Victorian cemeteries. You might know that it holds the grave sites of author George Eliot, actor Corin Redgrave, and countless other notables. And that Karl Marx’s tomb was the site of two attempted bombings. But you might not know that it in 1970, it was the site of a bizarre Vampire Panic. Literally. Atlas Obscura’s Dylan Thuras tells this tale of how quickly mass hysteria can build when you combine teenage legend-tripping, sensationalist press, and two dueling magicians. Truth is sometimes stranger than fiction.

Produced by Dylan Thuras
