Creating Life-long Memories for a Group of West Point Alums
A bunch of alumni to a group of friends
About 15 years ago, a group of alumni from West Point’s Class of 1955 started talking about traveling together. And since then, Rod Vitty, a 13-time traveler from Quechee, Vermont—who leads the “West Point Class of ‘55” group with his wife, Pat—explains, “We’ve led these avid world explorers on 13 trips with Grand Circle and OAT.”
The traveling alumni’s past trips include River Cruises to Russia, France, Egypt, and Eastern Europe, and vacations to Australia, Italy, and Ireland. And they recently returned from OAT’s Small Ship Adventure to Croatia and Greece.
“We’ve evolved from a graduating class of friends into a group comprised of friends of friends, spouses, and travelers we’ve met along the way who’ve met our group and wanted to travel with us,” says Rod.
Creating special memories for their group
Rod and Pat don’t simply return from their trips and begin planning their next adventure. Together, they take the time to create something special for their group members to remember each of their trips. “We like to create a book of our memories from each of the places we go,” shares Rod.
During their trips, everyone in the group keeps a daily log of what they’ve done and learned. When the group returns, Pat puts together the day-to-day itinerary, along with the many photos they’ve taken during the trip. Pat and Rod also include a list of all of the group members who’ve journeyed on the trip, and a map that shows the places the group went and what they saw in each destination.
“It’s a special reminder for all of us,” says Rod. “And since we’re getting older, it’s a nice way to remember things that we might otherwise forget.”
What they love most about leading their group
There are many things Rod and Pat love about being Group Leaders. “It’s given us the opportunity to go where we want to go and experience these places with a really fun group,” shares Rod. But it’s more than just exploring new destinations for these Group Leaders. It’s about the new friendships that form. “Many people we’ve met along the way have become friends—and they now travel with us. Traveling with Grand Circle has provided us with great opportunities to meet some truly wonderful people.”
