This is your chance to explore even more of Paris after your Cruising Burgundy & Provence to the Cote d'Azur River Cruise Tour comes to a close. This afternoon, join your Program Director for a discovery walk of his or her favorite Parisian district. You may visit Le Marais, a historic neighborhood that was once a popular residence of French aristocracy, and is today replete with elaborate architecture and diverse art galleries. Then, you may discover Ile St. Louis, a charming neighborhood located on an island in the Seine River with the ambiance of a 17th-century village that sets it apart from the hustle and bustle of Paris that surrounds it on all sides.
The rest of the day is yours to do as you please. You may want to visit the Musee d’Orsay, known as much for the building in which it is housed as for its superb collection of Impressionist, Post-Impressionist, and Art Nouveau artists. In 1898, the architect, Victor Laloux, won a competition to build a new train station on the site for the 1900 Paris World’s Fair. The station was built in only two years and was operational for the fair. The architect concealed the modern station with the facade of a classic stone hotel, creating a structure that naturally integrated with its elegant neighborhood. The building served a number of purposes after 1940, when it was no longer suitable for more modern trains. It was classified as a historical monument in 1976 and opened as a museum in 1986.
Dine on your own at a restaurant of your choice this evening. Or, join a different optional outing to a lively French cabaret performance and dinner. You'll find out why this kind of theater has been celebrated for so many years—in both France and throughout the world.
Your day is at leisure to explore Paris on your own. Perhaps you'll explore the magnificent Gothic Cathedral of Notre Dame and the Place de la Concorde or take advantage of the fine shopping to be had in Paris’s fashionable shops and boutiques.
Enjoy dinner on your own this evening.
Enjoy time at leisure in Paris today. Perhaps you’ll stroll through the historic Marais district. Dotted with lovely hotels, Jewish bakeries, and outdoor cafes, the Marais is home to the Picasso Museum, which you can visit on your own if you like. Or, join an optional half-day tour of one of Paris’ most famous and lively districts, Montmartre. Visit the famed Basilica of the Sacre Coeur, with its dramatic perch on the top of the Montmartre hill. Delight in the views of Paris below, and spend some time exploring the charming streets of this romantic neighborhood. Watch the street artists at work or browse the local shops for some souvenirs to bring home.
Join your fellow travelers for a Farewell Drink this evening before dinner on your own. Your Program Director will be happy to offer advice about local restaurants.
After breakfast, transfer to the airport for your flight home.
