After breakfast on the last day of your main Romantic Villages of Alpine Europe trip, you’ll feel the pulse of Bavaria’s capital as you explore Munich’s most interesting places on a guided tour. Named after the monastic order who founded the city, Munich today is one of Europe's publishing and finance powerhouses, but you'll still feel right at home—the city's motto is "Munchen mag dich" ("Munich loves you").

On your tour, you'll see Marienplatz, the central square, as well as Nymphenburg Palace and the world-renowned Glockenspiel, a masterpiece of clockwork on the front of the Town Hall. Next, you’ll be introduced to Munich’s biggest export: beer. The brewed beverage is an integral part of life in Bavaria, and the region is still home to more than 600 breweries (many of whom are represented at the city’s annual Oktoberfest celebrations). You’ll sample one of the city’s finest brews at an included beer tasting.

Your afternoon is at leisure. Perhaps you'll visit the 14th-century Residenz, the distinctive and informative BMW Museum, or perhaps you'll just enjoy the gemutlichkeit (coziness and good cheer) of a local beer hall. Today, both lunch and dinner are on your own, so you can feel free to branch out and explore different areas of the city.

The day is yours to discover more of Munich.

Or, you can join an optional tour of the Dachau Memorial. The Nazis turned a former ammunitions factory into the first concentration camp, and today the site is a moving memorial that recalls the senseless tragedy that took place here. Nearly 200,000 people were imprisoned at Dachau during its 12-year existence, and the number of dead may never be precisely known. You’ll walk through the site with your guide, as you learn about Dachau's horrifying legacy. Visiting this site, while troubling, is a truly powerful experience.

You’ll return to Munich in the afternoon, and will have the balance of the day to yourself. Both lunch and dinner are on your own.

Today, embark on your journey to Austria, stopping on the way at Chiemsee Lake, a pre-Alpine glacial lake with three islands dotting its surface. Take a ferry ride to Fraueninsel, where you'll enjoy a scenic discovery walk and lunch in a local restaurant before taking the ferry back to the mainland. Continuing on to Salzburg, you'll arrive in the late afternoon, with plenty of time for an orientation walk of your new neighborhood with your Program Director. Dinner on your own tonight.

After breakfast, begin your walking tour of Salzburg. A beautiful Medieval city, Salzburg is where the genius composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born. You’ll experience the fairy-tale feel of Old Town, where Mozart is beloved—so much so that a local confectioner named Paul Furst created a special candy devoted to the musical master called Mozartkugeln, which you'll have the chance to taste.

The afternoon is yours to continue your explorations. Witness the Hohensalzburg Fortress, stroll through the Mirabell Gardens, or simply soak in the Alpine beauty of this town. Lunch and dinner are on your own.

Your breakfast prepares you for another exciting day at leisure in Salzburg. Continue to enjoy storybook atmosphere here, or opt for a tour of the mountaintop refuge known as Hitler’s “Eagle’s Nest.”

This hideaway was a masterpiece of engineering perched atop Kehlstein Mountain, with commanding views of the surrounding landscape. It was primarily used to entertain dignitaries during Hitler’s time as Chancellor. You’ll begin your tour with a stop at the documentation center, a small museum of artifacts on the history of the region, a noted vacation spot for members of the Third Reich during the Nazi regime. You'll also tour the impressive underground bunker system constructed to protect Eagle's Nest before ascending to it, where you'll have free time to explore the fascinating details of this historic aerie and enjoy lunch atop the mountain.

Return to Salzburg this afternoon, and dinner tonight is at a local restaurant.
