For those of you who have taken this trip, after you are collected at the airport and taken to the ship, can you then leave and not come back until close to the time the ship leaves the dock (around 11 pm)?  We are trying to determine how much time we will actually have in Amsterdam (we are doing Amsterdam to Basel) or if we should go a day early.  We don't really care about eating dinner on the ship but didn't know if we had to be back for safety briefings and such.  Thanks.

When I was on this trip several years ago, it ended in Amsterdam so I can't answer your question. However, I would encourage you to plan to be onboard for the meeting before dinner. That is when they introduce the crew, give a ship briefing and explain the safety procedures. Also, it is when the PDs do the daily "port talk" about what's planned for the next day.

There are a couple of other things to consider when making plans for arrival day. If there are any significant flight delays, you may have very little time and energy for sight-seeing. Also you may be surprised at how early it gets dark there at that time of year. If you really want to see some of Amsterdam on this trip, go at least two days early.

Yes, you can leave the ship and come back later. It leaves about 11 pm from Amsterdam. My flight into Amsterdam arrived about 9 am (nonstop from LAX) and it was like having a full day! Amsterdam has so much to see and is so compact and easy to walk. The ship is docked near Centraal Station and it's easy to get into town.
