Planning a Norway trip in 2014 with a pre trip in St. Petersburg.  Does it make sense to buy liquor in US at duty free shop?

It all depends on what you drink. In most of the world, whiskey means scotch. If you drink vodka, that is available everywhere. In the Scandinavian countries, except for  Denmark, stores that sell liquor are not that common, and liquor is fairly expensve. In Russia, liquor is easy to find, and prices are reasonable.

Prices in Duty free are not all that much better than in a liquor store in the staes, also, except in the airport where you buy it, you probably can not get it through security in carryon, and as duty free is after security, you can not get it into your checked bads.

Although this is specifically about Europe,. I will mention Australia,  New Zealand and Fiji. In those countries the taxes on liquor are extremly high, as a means to discourage drinking. The only place to get reasobly priced liquor is in the airports. It seem that it does not have to be an international flight, and you can by on arrival or departure.

I think duty free shops at U.S. airports are really expensive. When I've taken liquor gifts to friends in other countries, I usually shop at Costco. Much cheaper. I put bubble wrap around it and put it in the middle of my suitcase for padding and then check the bag. Don't take in your carry-on, of course, because it'll be confiscated at security gate.

If you're not flying direct that may be a problem.  Most airports in Europe make you go through security again when going to connecing flights.  I don't think they will not let you take the bottle through security.

I 'm sure the folks working security would enjoy a good bottle of Scotch.:)
