It has been suggested, and I agree, that the information that I originally posted on another thread would be helpful to anyone interested in travel writing.

For anyone scheduled for, planning, or merely considering the UA trip with Cape Town extension (which we took a couple of years ago), I'd like to recommend a new book by one of my favorite travel writers:  Paul Theroux.  The Last Train to Zona Verde - My Ultimate African Safari.  Boston and New York: Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, 2013.

Chapters 2 and 3, about the Cape Town area, are especially applicable.  Theroux is an intelligent, observant traveler, not just a tourist, and he presents the place as it is and not as we might wish it to be: the good, the bad, the ugly.  He discusses in detail many of the places that you undoubtedly will visit, and personal comparisons can then be made.

You likely will not like everything you see in Cape Town, but Theroux probably will help you understand it better.

Great trip - I heartily recommend it!

I read Theroux's latest book. As usual, it's enlightening.

I got it from the library and wished that I'd had it on hand when the discussion about the elephant rides came up recently.

I thought the same thing: lots of conversation about lion-walking and elephant-riding, but not about people-watching.  Theroux addresses that, and very well.

For you Paul Theroux fans, and travel book fans in general, also read his book "The Tao of Travel" - a compilation of quotes from other writers and from his previous books  organized around topics such as "my worst trip" etc.
