I am concerned about the violent demonstrations against the ruling party in Turkey.  How will this affect our visit to Istanbul at the end of the Sept. 11th "Treasures of the Aegean" cruise?  Do we expect any problems with visas or harrassment by the local authorities?

We were in Istanbul on an independent trip...we in a hotel just a block off Taksim Square for the first five days of the demonstrations and only the first day did it get out of hand because of the police intervention...the police backed off on the second day and things were realstively peaceful for the rest of the time we  were there...it appears as of yesterday that the police have gotten heavy-handed once more...while we were there demonstrations were only taking place on Taksim itself and we saw no other eveidence of demonstrations anywhere else in Istanbul the remaining five days we were there....the taxi drivers knew routes around the demonstrations...I would not expect any change to the governments policy toward tourist since it is a substantial part of their economy...The best advise would be to stay away from the Taksim area but enjoy the rest of Istanbul..
