I am taking the China & Yangtze River Cruise trip departing on 10.15.2013,  I will arrive in Beijing a couple of days before the tour.  I want to do some reading to get ready, any suggestions on both guide books and more general books?

Also, I will only carry one guidebook, for those who have been there, what would you recommend?

Thanks

We found the Frommer's China guide helpful.  We read it fairly throughly before we left and then took with us just the pages ....maps, restaurants,sights...that seemed most pertinent.

If you go into the tour description under Land Tours and find the Travel Handbook, you can download and read it online.  Towards the back, there should be listings of useful reading material.

I second what Oldbog posted about not carrying an entire travel guide.  I always read them and then tear out the most useful pages.

I'm taking this trip in May and have enjoyed reading "The Private Life of Chairman Mao" by his personal physician Dr. Li Zhisui. Fascinating!
