Hello to all tour members;

With this initiative I hope to start helpful communication among us, share any concerns, and more.

From the list of names it looks like we'll have a diverse group, and it should be interesting, and exciting! A few points:

  • We have looked at the air pollution issue, and will bring basic (disposable) masks.
  • In addition to getting all the recommended shots, we'll have some general meds with us, and so-called 'Z-packs'.
  • If you Google the hotels where we'll be staying, them go to IMAGES, you'll get some good general visuals of the places
  • Generally, the hotels are rather 'Westernized'
  • Souvenirs -- Caveat Emptor. Enough said.  Very few 'deals', and many imitations.  Maybe a few local crafts are nice and worthy, i.e. peals, silk?? Of course, bargaining GALORE is a basic rule...
  •  We'll attempt to pack light, and have some quick wash & rinse items.
  • Water can & should be purchased ONLY in sealed bottles. Beware of re-filled ones!!
  • Converted money in the U.S. through our (major) bank. In China theexchange rates, and possible hassles can be avoided
  • Bring a large digital memory card in your camera!! I'll be equipped for up to about 9000 shots and my camera is 18 Megapixles.... Yeah, I am going over-the-top, but will surely erase more that half.
  • ---->>>>  LETS COMMUNICATE!!!

Looking forward to lots of fun.

See you soon. Our departure is from Detroit via Delta.

Warmly,

Yola & Ed

Hello Yola and Ed,

Please consider moving this topic to the Meet Other Travelers on Your Departure forum which is a more appropriate location than Website & Forum Feedback. Thank you.

edandyola (posted)....In addition .....we'll have some.....so-called 'Z-packs'.

FWIW, (In case you didn't see it) just yesterday the FDA issued a warning on a possible deadly side effect on the antibiotic that's sold as Zithromax, Zmax or sometimes referred to as a "Z-Pack". It is prescribed to treat bacterial infections such as bronchitis, pneumonia, or ear infections:

Hi Yola and Ed,

  We are also on the March 29 tour.   We have a few N95 masks, not sure if enough since apparently there can be pollution or sand in several different areas.

  Yes - we are aware of the Z-pak warninigs that just came out.  I still plan to request an Rx. for it.   Was glad I had it in Mongolia in Sept (one of our trip members picked up a respiratory bug in Yunnan Provience, China and I eventually surcummed). We had flights on both of the next 2 days after I started the fever so I needed to recover fast.

  Does anyone have an idea of how warm or cold the hotels are in April?  I've read China has rules about which months  heat or air conditioning can be used in hotels, but haven't seen which months are for heat, for AC, or in-between.  The Yunnan hotels were fine without either, but they were also further south than Guilin.

  We are looking forward to a great trip with you and our other fellow travelors - have done prior trips with OAT but this is our first with GCT.  BTW - do  GCT program directors usually email us a week or 2 before the trip?  Most of the OAT tour guides do.

Zoe, the tour guide in Yunnan was so good, and Yunnan 8 days so terrific,  that I wanted to do the main China tour (China/Mongolia was the only tour I've done without Shel).  Is anyone else on the flight from Detroit Metro to Beijing?

Donna & Shel

Hello to all the 3/29/13 'gang' members;

Thanks for the helpful feedback.

We plan to check the weather in China before our departure. Wundeground is a good site. http://www.wunderground.com/cgi-bin/findweather/hdfForecast?query=beijing

Have you all seen how the elctrical plugs look in China??

Cloths???  Layers for us.

Cheers,

Ed & Yola
