We are going to Australia the end of April, starting in Melbourne, then going to the Outback.  We have some lightweight, collapsible hiking poles that will fit in our suitcases.  Would they be useful on any of the walks or hikes?  I've never seen anyone mention using them or wishing they had them.  Thanks!

We did this trip in June 2010 including both the outback pre-trip and the Fiji post-trip, and don't see a need for poles. If you do take them, make sure that they have "baskets" as the sand in the outback can be quite soft. If you want a review of the trip see http://jackthetravelingman.blogspot.com/.
