My husband and I will be on the China & the Yangtze River cruisetour in October and I have a question about the optional trip to the Beijing Opera.  We love opera and are huge supporters here in the states.  However, we remember our trip to the ballet while in Russia.  It was a mediocre production of the Nutcracker, one clearly put together for a tourist audience, not for Russian ballet lovers.  If you have been to the Beijing Opera optional would you let us know what you thought of the production?  Thanks.

I'm pretty sure that the "Peking Opera" and Beijing Opera are the same optional tour.  IT WAS DEFINITELY DIFFERENT!!!   The scenery/costumes/make-up/show were authentic.  What we couldn't get over was the SCREECHING NOISE OF THE ACTORS.  Our program manager, Albert (and if you're lucky you will get him!) warned us ahead of time that it was the old/original opera performance style.  I wear two hearing aids and turned them completely off and still had no problem hearing the show.  The screeching was unexpectedly shocking & the stunned look on most everyone's face was truly comical.  I'm not proud of the fact that I/we had a bad case of the giggles.  We were not alone.  My husband and I are not particularly opera fans, but how often are you in China and get the chance to see the Beijing Opera?  Are we glad we did it?  YES.  We still talk & giggle about it two years later.  Would we do it again? NO.  ONCE was enough.

We had another opportunity to see an optional opera (Shanghai?) that included dinner.  It wasn't "SCHREECHY" and we would do it again.

We almost always take the optional tours and we haven't been disappointed.  Life is an adventure.  Go for it.
