Back in February of 2012, Grand Circle sent out a "Cast Your Vote" paper regarding a new itinerary...Ukraine and Dnieper River.  In the paper they had three versions of the trip.

1.   Ukraine & Dnieper River Cruise TWELVE nights on board ship (a 14-day cruise).

You would use the ship while being docked three nights to see Kiev.

2.   Above cruise TEN nights on board (12 day cruise).

You would use the ship while being docked two nights to see kiev.

3.  Above cruise 7 nights on board (12 day cruise) staying three nights in a HOTEL to  see   Kiev.

The current offering is for 11 nights on board BUT three HOTEL nights in Kiev and then on to Bucharest for a HOTEL stay before departing home or post trip.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It would be a much better trip if Grand Circle had used the stay in KIEV on board the ship instead of a hotel for three nights.  It is much more enjoyable to use the ship for many reasons:  Eliminate packing and unpacking for the Kiev hotel, Having great meals on board the ship, the comradery of ship mates, etc.

We hope Grand Circle will reconsider this trip plan and eliminate the Kiev hotel stay and use the ship instead for the stay in that city.

This is a similar issue as on Russia Revealed . When GCT first resumed the trip,  they used the ships for lodging in both Moscow and St. Petersburg. People were unhappy with the locations of the river ports, both due to a lack of attractions in the area of the river ports and, due to traffic congestion, the time it took to get to the attractions. They then  offered two different trips, one using the the ships for hotels, the other in centrally located hotels. People were not happy with the hotels and the meals in the city. GCT ended up going back to the ships. I don't know KIev, but the river port is 1.5 miles from the centrally located hotel. I also don't know what what the area of the river ports. Using the ship could also increase the cost per day. It would also reduce the number of trips that Grand Circle could offer in the year.

Only experience will tell what works out better.

One of our favorite trips was the Russia revealed where the ship was docked and we stayed on the ship .. No hotels!  We enjoy listening to our program directors on the bus rides and learned much from them while on the way to different optionals, etc.

I seem to remember that I voted for the 10 nights on board the ship.  For the same reasons that Jayge mentioned.  The hotel in Kiev isn't the Radisson Blu, according to the description.  I'm not familiar with any of the hotels they mention on the extensions, with the exception of the New Montana.  That must be the best of a really terrible selection, because I can't think of anything good to say about it.

Also, about using ship as hotel instead of staying in a hotel, we remember a drizzly day in Russia and returning to the ship after being outdoors and waiting for us were the captain and some crew members with hot sweet tea as we boarded the ship.

This does not happen in a hotel stay.

Another nice thing is being able to either go up on the sun deck and either reading, having a nice beverage or a chat with new friends.

We just love being on board instead of hotel stays.

Do not miss the Russia revealed trip..we were aboard the ship, rossia
