My wife and I are thinking about taking the Tuscany & Amalfi Coast trip.  However, we have  major problems with any smoke in a restaurant.  We just returned from a Great Rivers of Europe trip and the separation of smoking/nonsmoking in Austria and Germany restaurants made eating in them a major disappointment.

Since this would be totally a land based trip, it's important for us to know if the restaurants in Italy are non-smoking and whether it is enforced.  Does anyone have first-hand experience with this trip?  Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Lloyd

I was in Rome last November and there was no one smoking inside resturants.  Italian law bans smoking in public places.   The only place you might have a problem is if you want to eat outside in a sidewalk cafe' where they do smoke.

I agree with p.c. We were in Sicily earlier this year. Our program director and our driver were both chain smokers. But they did not smoke on the bus and they did not smoke inside any building, restaurant or hotel. Most restaurants had an outdoor seating area where smoking was allowed. But I saw nobody smoking inside. My visit in Rome, Sorrento, and Tuscany was in 2007, but even then there was no smoking inside any restaurant, as I recall. On both trips we requested non-smoking rooms and all of our rooms were indeed non-smoking..

Many thanks.  These comments will help in our deciding to take the trip.
