We have one of those cell phones [cheap-prepaid] which is awesome, but when traveling in Europe we cannot use it.

I have seen ads for calling cards in Europe at different places.

Has anyone used those things? How do they work?

I only want to call some friends during my trip to check on my house and pet.  We do not have a laptop or smart phone etc.

Thank you.

We did not use a calling card but did purchase a sim card for our phone for Germany.  We could not use the phone in Amersterdam or Vienna but most of the trip was in Germany.  It does come in handy.  There is a laptop on the ship you can use, for a small charge, to keep in touch back home.  Now with internet access on ships,  I am sure someone would allow you to send an email home from their laptop.  Good luck!!!

I just reread your post and realized you did not mention where in Europe. You can purchase a sim card for most countries.  We also bought one for France.  It worked great in France but once we flew into England we could not use it.  Once again, hope I have helped and good luck.
