Bargain Spots
ALDI
Most Germans do their everyday shopping at ALDI stores, where the quality is high and the prices are low. Established in 1948, the discount supermarket chain is known for their no-frills approach: service is minimal, with long checkout lines customary; shopping carts require a coin deposit, which is returned when the cart is; and selection is generally limited to two brands per product.

HEMA
For bargains, head to a local HEMA store (see www.hema.nl for locations). In addition to household items ranging from light bulbs to tea kettles, this Dutch chain sells food, and their rookworst, a spicy smoked sausage, is the best in the country.

Kaysersberg
One of the most beautiful villages along the Wine Road of Alsace is Kaysersberg, set in the foothills of the Vosges mountains. Birthplace of the great humanitarian and Nobel laureate Albert Schweitzer, Kaysersberg is famous for its exceptional 16th- and 17th-century Alsatian architecture. It's also an important wine village and a place where you'll find authentic Alsatian culture. And if you come during Christmastime, you'll feel as though you stepped into a fairy tale when you see its Christmas market!
