Inspiring Us to Action

The great British Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli once said, “The legacy of heroes is the memory of a great name and the inheritance of a great example.” Grand Circle Foundation is honored to benefit from the great example set by several modern heroes who serve as our mentors. Former President of Poland and recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize Lech Walesa courageously led his country out of Communism through his Solidarity movement. Today, Mr. Walesa is helping to establish the Goetz Academy in Warsaw, an internationally oriented residential school that offers a rigorous curriculum, with studies in holistic personal development based on the philosophy of Dr. Carl Hahn. The newest member of our Board of Honorary Directors, Mr. Walesa visited Grand Circle headquarters in Boston last year, where he discussed issues of leadership and courage with Grand Circle associates and community partners.

Barbara Washburn continues to carry on the pioneering spirit and dedication to education she shared with her husband, Bradford Washburn. Together, they advanced our understanding of the world’s great mountain ranges, leading mapping and photographic expeditions that included Mt. McKinley, the Grand Canyon, Mt. Everest, and the Matterhorn. Mrs. Washburn is also a former teacher and member of many charitable and educational groups dedicated to children. She continues to serve as an Honorary Director of Grand Circle Foundation.

Another Honorary Director with a long commitment to education is Dr. Rodrigo Carazo, former president of Costa Rica and founder of the International University for Peace. Dr. Carazo was instrumental in arranging last year’s World Classroom Teacher Exchange program between Boston and Costa Rican schools.

Educating future generations about the Holocaust is the mission of Honorary Director Kazimierz Smolen of Poland, former director at the State Museum of Auschwitz-Birkenau, a World War II resistance fighter, and himself a Holocaust survivor. Lessons from the past are also the specialty of Selahattin Erdemgil, a leading expert on the ruins at Ephesus, Turkey. And former assistant secretary general of the United Nations Dr. Robert Muller has devoted his career to bringing peace to the world.

Grand Circle Foundation is grateful to have this distinguished panel serving as our mentors, advisors, and examples of leadership. In addition to providing stewardship, our Honorary Directors also recommend and advise on worthwhile projects.
