“Girling Out” in Italy
Don’t get me wrong, I love traveling with Alan and the rest of my family—but there’s something special about traveling with girlfriends. I feel less responsibility, in a way—less pressure to make sure everyone is having fun. Plus, it’s so much fun to just “girl out.” It makes me feel free, and vibrant, and young again.
Every January for more than a decade, I’ve visited Italy with my girlfriends—and now that the cool weather is returning to Boston, I’m already looking forward to our next girls’ vacation. Rome may be cold in January, but it’s worth it because there are so few tourists. Plus, it makes the food, wine, and pastries taste all the more comforting. As soon as we arrived in Rome, we found a pastry shop before we even checked into our hotel—talk about being girly! And, girls being girls, the chilly weather didn’t stop us from enjoying gelato in Piazza Navona.
I also decided to get my hair done at an old-fashioned hair salon in Rome. It reminded of where my mother used to go every week when I was a little girl. I couldn’t resist taking a photo.
Do you have a special place that you like to visit year after year—or a special group of people you travel with? I hope you’ll tell me about it in an email or in the comments. We’ll be featuring our small ship and river cruises in France next month in Harriet’s Corner (including our newest itinerary in the Riviera!), but I love hearing about all of your journeys.
