Bringing a taste of Europe home
The end of summer is one of my favorite times of year—meeting up with friends for get-togethers outdoors before the fall chill hits the air. There's nothing quite like the joy of sharing your family recipes—each one with its own unique memories and traditions—with your "inner circle" around the grill or campfire. And even though, after all these years of marriage, I still haven't managed to perfectly re-create Alan's mother's delectable apple pie, that doesn't stop me from trying! That's why I'm always so delighted when our Program Directors share family recipes, including this one delicious one for kartoffelsalat, or German potato salad. The savory version from PD Michaela Mark featured in this month's Global Kitchen is easier to make than that apple pie, and pairs nicely with your last grilled burger or hot dog of the season.
Fall here in Boston is truly a singular experience, and I’m always so grateful to be from a place where the trees turn beautiful hues of gold, crimson, and orange. It’s the same kind of landscapes that inspired Vicki Campbell, a 5-time traveler from Juneau, Alaska, to reserve a fall departure of Romance of the Rhine & Mosel. The colorful landscapes of towns such as Bruges, Antwerp, Trier, and Cochem feature prominently in her travel video and pictures, and she shares them and her European memories in this month’s Traveler Story.
But as wonderful as making new discoveries and memories is, there’s nothing quite resting your head in a place you call your own. For one veteran, that is a dream that came true thanks to Grand Circle Foundation and a special group of helpers—our Next Generation Leaders. Each year this energetic group of inner-city college-bound teens participates in challenging and fulfilling internships here at our Boston office. This year they also volunteered to help 28-year-old Justin move through our Up and Out Program. You can read his story, as written through the eyes of one of our teen Leaders, in this month’s Community News & Views.
