With our True Choice Program, you can choose to stay longer before or after your trip on your own, or combine two vacations to maximize your value. Here are more ways to create the Grand Circle Cruise Line River Cruise that’s right for you:

  • Choose our standard air routing, or work with us to select the airline and routing you prefer
  • Make your own international flight arrangements directly with the airline, applying frequent flyer miles if available
  • International airport transfers to and from your ship or hotel are available for purchase
  • Stay overnight in a connecting city before or after your trip
  • Request to arrive a few days early to get a fresh start on your vacation
  • Choose to “break away” before or after your trip, spending additional days or weeks on your own
  • Extend your vacation with our optional pre- and post-trip extensions
  • Combine your choice of Grand Circle Cruise Line vacations to maximize your value
  • Upgrade to business or premium economy class

The air options listed above will involve an additional fee of $100 per person for confirmed requests (as well as incremental airfare costs based on your specific choice). This service fee will be waived for Inner Circle/Sir Edmund Hillary Club members.

Resides in: Wiener Neudorf, Austria
Languages: English, German, Spanish, Dutch, French, Italian, and Portuguese
Hobbies & Interests: Tennis, reading, swimming, spending time with my daughter, Anna-Elena

Get to know Rudy:

I grew up being a part of all different cultures. I was born in South Africa due to the nature of my parents’ work, and we lived there until I was nine. My family then moved to Europe—first to Spain, where we lived for a year, and then on to the Netherlands and France. Later, I moved to Guatemala, and lived there for six years before heading back to France and the Netherlands, and in 2004, to Austria, where I’ve spent the past seven years. I now live in a small town just outside of Vienna called Wiener Neudorf. My travels have allowed me to study all over the world, including South Africa, Spain, the Netherlands, and France, and I graduated with a degree in languages while living in Guatemala. I later went to university in Paris, where I studied ancient and modern history.

I’ve worked in tourism most of my life. When I was 16, I worked at a luxury hotel where my mother had a jewelry shop—so I met many travelers. After I completed my studies, I began managing shops and cruise directing on large ocean liners. I found these large ships quite impersonal, and preferred smaller ships, which were ideal for interacting with guests.

In the past, I’ve taken some of my travelers to a local German pub to watch a soccer match, where we’ve supported the opposing team. I try my best to provide moments of discovery like this for my groups.

Rudy’s Insider Tips:
Gasthaus Kneitinger photo

Unique Food & Drink:
Gasthaus Kneitinger (Arnulfsplatz 3) is a popular restaurant in Regensburg that’s within walking distance of where our ship docks. It’s a traditional Bavarian guesthouse with its own brewery, and serves up hearty portions of common favorites like schweinebratenBratwurst, and zwiebelrostbraten at very reasonable prices. To find a seat at one of the wooden benches and tables, just ask the locals “Ist dies frei?” (Is this free?”). The beer comes right out of wooden barrels and is considered among the best in Germany. Waitresses walk around with a basket of filled glasses, and once you empty your glass, you’ll get a refill without being asked. The waitress just marks a stripe to your coaster for every beer served. This is what the locals refer to as “building fences.”

Local Culture & Etiquette:
Never try to speak German to a Dutch person or you will become quite unpopular. Many people in the Netherlands still harbor resentment about World War II, and it’s also got to do with a longtime soccer rivalry. We don’t appreciate it when people confuse our national language with German. Better to learn a few phrases in Dutch, or to speak English, which 99% of Dutch people speak quite well.
