  • Make your own international flight arrangements directly with the airline, applying frequent flyer miles if available
  • Stay overnight in a connecting city before or after your trip
  • Request to arrive a few days early to get a fresh start on your vacation
  • Choose to “break away” before or after your trip, spending additional days or weeks on your own

Optional Tour

Varazdin ($80 per person)

Day 1
Transfer from Bled, Slovenia to Zagreb, Croatia/City tour

This morning, transfer from Bled to Zagreb. After checking in to your hotel, your Program Director will give you a brief orientation tour. You have the expert assistance of a Grand Circle Program Director available throughout your extension to help you plan independent touring, dining, and other activities. Enjoy free time for lunch on your own before you begin your Zagreb city tour in the afternoon.

Like many medieval cities, Zagreb includes an Upper and Lower Town. Your included city tour starts in the Lower Town (Donji Grad), where you’ll see many of the city’s civic and historic monuments. Once you reach Upper Town, the tour will focus on Zagreb’s medieval landmarks, such as its stone gates and St. Mark’s Church. Your walk ends at the Square of Ban Jelacic (Trg Bana Jelacic), the city’s hub.

Your afternoon is free to continue independent exploration from this central location. You might visit the Croatian Museum of Natural Sciences, which has a unique exhibit displaying the most extensive remains of a Neanderthal Man ever found on one site. Or delve into regional history at the Croatian Historical Museum and the Museum of Arts and Crafts.

Dinner is on your own this evening.

Day 2
Zagreb/Optional Varazdin tour

Today, explore Zagreb and its environs on your own. You might enjoy lunch on your own at any of several cafes in the square.

Or, join us for an optional excursion to the lovely Baroque city of Varazdin. For centuries, this was the home of several aristocratic families who built magnificent palaces and churches that continue to grace the city today. Varazdin’s centerpiece is its moated castle, entered via a drawbridge, which is now a museum featuring antique furniture from different eras. Begun in the twelfth century, the castle was still used as a seat of local government until 1925, and is set in a park with striking landscaping. After free time to stroll around Varazdin at your own pace, enjoy lunch in a local restaurant.

Day 3
Zagreb/Explore at leisure

Take advantage of a free day to plan your own activities.

This evening, sit down with your Grand Circle Program Director and travel companions for a Farewell Dinner in your hotel.

Day 4
Zagreb/Return to U.S.

After breakfast, you'll transfer to the airport for your flight home.
