M/S Tikhi Don
The M/S Tikhi Don offers a relaxing way to see Russia. Accompanied only by other Grand Circle passengers, you'll travel with up to six local Program Directors. It and its sister ship the M/S Rossia are the best vessels sailing on the Volga today, with cabins 50% larger than other Russian river ships.
Relax in your outside cabin
Your outside cabin measures 130-150 square feet. Unpack only once, then enjoy twin beds (which you may choose to push together to create a double), storage space, a table and two chairs, and a private bath with shower.
In addition, you’ll appreciate having a picture window that opens, a refrigerator, and a flat-screen satellite television with CNN. All rooms are non-smoking.
Socialize with fellow travelers
After a day of exploring ashore, return to the lounge to enjoy the company of your exclusively American fellow travelers as you talk over your day’s discoveries. Or, relax on the panoramic Sun Deck, an ideal place to take in the passing scenery while sipping coffee or tea or writing postcards. And when it comes time for meals, continue your conversations in the ship’s dining room, where you’ll be served regional and international cuisine at a single, open seating.
Your Grand Circle crew and service
You’ll be attended to by a crew that is committed to your safety and enjoyment. In fact, there is one crew member for every two passengers onboard. All shipboard announcements and signage are in English. River ship cabins and ship amenities are sufficient but not lavish. The M/S Tikhi Don is well equipped for sailing Russian rivers, but its common areas are smaller, and the lounge cannot accommodate all passengers at once. Groups are usually divided up among common areas, with each subgroup having identical activities at the same time. Most activities on board will take place in the Sun Deck bar, to which there is no elevator access. In sum, keep in mind that in post-Soviet Russia, standards of comfort are still not up to par with what you’ll find elsewhere in Europe—particularly aboard the Grand Circle ships that cruise the Rhine, Main, and Danube rivers. But even though your shipboard accommodations are not luxurious, you’ll have all the basic amenities you’ll need for a pleasant journey.
Please note: The M/S Tikhi Don is not equipped with wheelchair access. Elevator service is available from the Main Deck to the Boat Deck. There is no elevator access to the Sun Deck, which is the primary common area where most group activities take place. These ships do not have extensive soundproofing so you may hear noise from air-conditioning and other machinery onboard at any time. The promenade deck extends around the outside of all cabins, so passengers walking by may come between your window and the distant view. Also, during port stops, ships may dock side-by-side, obstructing views and requiring you to pass through other ships to embark and disembark.
