Enjoy a new included tour to Casato Prime Donne Winery
By Patty Willard, Area Manager, Italy
I’m excited to share that we are now featuring a new included tour on our Tuscany & the Amalfi Coast vacation. During the second week of our tour through Tuscany, you’ll be given the opportunity to visit Montalcino, where you’ll enjoy a trip to the Casato Prime Donne winery, famous for its Brunello of Montalcino wine.
The winery is comprised of about 45 acres of vineyard—and what makes it so special is that it’s operated entirely by women. In fact, it's the only winery in Italy with an all-female staff. The Val d’Orcia area of Tuscany has been declared an UNESCO World Heritage Site, so as you tour the vineyard, you’ll be able to experience the beauty of the surrounding landscapes.
And as you explore the area, you’ll discover a special trail decorated with works of art, as well as quotations and sayings from past winners of the Casato Prime Donne Award—given to women who help to promote, photograph, and study the Montalcino area and its wines. The main prize is awarded to a woman who has shown leadership in advancing the role of women in society.
The vineyard produces Rosso and Brunello di Montalcino wines. You’ll be able to tour the wine barrels, which are surrounded by frescoes displaying the rich history of Montalcino (which literally means “Mount of the Oak”). You’ll also be able to read about the Battle of Montaperti, when residents were given the nickname Beccamorti (gravedigger).
At the end of our tour of Casato Prime Donne, you can sample three of the best wines and local produce from the area. Although the included tour is still new, our travelers have shared positive feedback and really enjoy their visit to the vineyard.
